Always have an arrow loaded when you shoot, as repeated dry firing will quickly wear out the crossbow string. For proper maintenance, apply bow string wax to the exposed string, not the serving, and use your thumb and index finger to work the wax into the string. As you work the wax in, you'll notice it becoming softer as the heat from your hand causes it to melt. Never use a frayed string, as it may break when you are cocking the bow, which could result in damage to the crossbow and/or injury to the user. If the string becomes frayed, immediately replace it with a new one. Even with proper use, your crossbow string will eventually need replacing, so it's smart to keep spares available.
